A couple of nights ago I photographed a bridal session, and I am very happy with the resulting images. I did find myself occasionally wishing the studio was just a couple of feet wider, or a few feet longer so I could have a little more negative space below the train, but I think there will always be those wishes . . . Eating Contest

This past weekend I shot an eating contest at the Mississippi State fair for a fast food chain who is sponsoring it.  The contest I shot was a regional semi-final, where the winner goes to the national finals.  The winner consumed 44 small square hamburgers in eight minutes.  This shot isn’t of the winner, but he is a nationally ranked “competitive eater.”

And just because web resolution just doesn’t do justice to the detail this shot contains, here is a detail shot.

Had an appointment for this morning cancel, so I went out and did a few shots downtown. I have previously photographed the Lamar Life building, but I was never very satisfied with the results. With the good skies we have had the last few mornings I thought I might have good luck today.

Serrano back in the news

Martyr, History of Sex, by Andreas Serrano

It has been a while since I have heard much about Andreas Serrano, probably since a course on modern art writing I took in college.  If you were paying any attention to the news back in 1989 you probably heard quiet a bit about Serrano.  He was one of the NEA grant recipients whose work was given so much attention by congress, more specifically his photograph “Piss Christ” was the subject of much debate. Photoshop Action: Lens Shift

I’m supposed to be editing images to send to the free press (which I’m also doing), but while I wait on actions to process I’ve been flipping through the SeptemberThey frequently have articles on how to create a certain photoshop effect, or action, or “insert photoshop term here”; and I frequently find I could care less about the end goal of the tutorial.  However, sometimes there are photoshop techniques used in a way that is new to me, or occasionally something I didn’t know how to do is buried in an otherwise lackluster tutorial, so I always read through the steps hoping to find a hidden prize.  Alas, today there were no prizes.   I did however think of an interesting application for the techniques they were discussing, and after a quick google search I see that others have already done the same thing.  About a year or so ago, several prominent photographers were doing landscapes which  looked like miniatures because of the tilt and shift controls on their large format backs.  Basically they were creating a surreal short depth of field that made real landscapes look like miniatures.

So I made an action to do the same thing, or you could use it on portraits for a funky effect too.  The image below is before the action.

This is the after image (I also increased the contrast after running the action).

Ink Spot Show

For those few of my readers who don’t already know, one of downtown Jacksons newest art galleries is also one of its newest tattoo parlors, the Ink Spot.  Last night a new show opened of work by Joe Dunn, Daniel Johnson, Richard Mckey, and Bexx.  As always there was plenty of good work to be seen, but a couple of pieces in particular stood out to me.  Daniel Johnson’s two paintings entitled “Support Structure” are worth the trip to the gallery alone.  In a style that reminds me of Keith Haring obsessed with brush strokes, Johnson manages to convey more than his simple figures initially seem capable.

The show will be hanging until November.

Elton John and Nan Goldin sittin in a tree

This post is basically just an update on an earlier one. Seems that Sir John asked the “Baltic arts centre on the banks of the River Tyne in Gateshead” (I know that isn’t the actual name of the museum, but every news outlet I have read has used that description) to close the exhibit of the Thanksgiving series. Continue reading ‘Elton John and Nan Goldin sittin in a tree’

Harry Callahan @ High Museum of Art

Harry Callahan: Eleanor will be on display at at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta from September 8 – December 9. High Museum describes the show with the following:

This exhibition focuses on the two decades from the early 1940s to the early 1960s when Eleanor was the primary focus of Callahan’s work. This period resulted in many of his most acclaimed and influential photographs. These photographs of Eleanor include precisely arranged formal poses in public spaces and intimate nudes.

The Best Worst Writing I’ve Seen in a While

Papers have started coming in, which means I am confronted again with just how bad some students are at expressing their thoughts on paper. Some are so bad that they transcend the boundaries of lame and become awesome, even if only in that kitschy manner. Continue reading ‘The Best Worst Writing I’ve Seen in a While’
