I finally got back out to the fair grounds for a few more pictures. I got permission from the company that runs the fair (as opposed to the fair grounds), and the man I talked to actually advised me to not ask the employees permission before photographing them. I asked anyway. And I got a lot of negative responses. After all of the “no, I’m wanted in six states” responses, here is what’s left. Continue reading ‘Carl’s Carnies’
I had just finished taking a portrait downtown for the free press, right as the sun was going down, so I decided to try and get a few sunset shots. I had the clever idea to drive up to the top of the city’s garage, but the garage is closed on Sundays. Not to be dissuaded, I parked in front of the swinging arm that lets you in the garage and climbed the six flights of stairs. Once I had my camera and tripod set up I had time for probably 6 shots before the security guard arrived and asked me to leave. He was very polite and even let me take two more shots before he escorted me out. This is the second of those two shots:
There is an image shot by a local photographer of the Ferris wheel from last years fair, which I am clearly ripping off, so some credit should be given to Hubert Worley (who I recently found out did some nice reproductions for William Dunlap’s most recent book). All of this is to ask which shot do you like better?
And in case you are one of those People (i.e photographers) who are really critical of camera motion, sharpness, etc. I have a detail shot of the first image just for you.
I have recently been duplicating some negatives from the twenties, which I am sure were only taken as snapshots, but there is something very compelling about them beyond the subjects they document. I recently documented our dogs (without dressing them in funny outfits).
Is there anything compelling about the image outside of them just being dogs?
Or do I only like them because I like the dogs?
