Live and Let Draw

I just finished my piece I am submitting for the Live and Let Draw Call for Entries. The winning artwork will be used for the Greater Jackson Arts Council’s Storytellers Ball promotions. Obviously, the theme of this years Storytellers Ball is James Bond.

The inspiration for my piece is the original movie poster artwork done by Robert McGinnis. A few of you hardcore Bond dorks probably know he is the originator of the now iconic Bond pose holding a pistol. McGinnis’s poster relied heavily on the mysticism of the movie, utilizing tarot cards as a major part of the design.

I took the tarot card theme and the basic design of the lower part of the poster. For my version of the tarot cards I initially thought about making artists the images on the tarot cards, but decided that would be a bit much. Instead I decided to base my cards on the designs by Pamela Colman Smith. I made my cards from cardstock then had tore the edges and toned the paper down with film spot toner (I have more than I will ever need). My take on the lower section was to arrange art supplies at the same angles, and use the edges of my paint pallete for the edge design elements McGinnis created with road and reptile. The rest was a bit more improvised; I wanted the bond tuxedo, but looser, and I wanted an everyman/everywoman feel to it, then the martini just seemed to fit. The other parts are just me sticking my thumb print on it . . . long exposures, multiple flashes, blind contour that I work back into with ink, hand-coloring, etc.

Fenian’s deserves a little credit for the loan of the martini glass, or maybe Fenian’s wonderful staff.

Sadly, one of my biggest motivations for entering . . . beating Gorjus . . . will probably not be achieved, because his lazy-ass isn’t entering.

Below is a detail from the center of the piece:

Yay! no more surfcontrol. It is almost disappointing how reasonable they were and how quickly they acted . . . makes them harder to hate.
