I finally got back out to the fair grounds for a few more pictures. I got permission from the company that runs the fair (as opposed to the fair grounds), and the man I talked to actually advised me to not ask the employees permission before photographing them. I asked anyway. And I got a lot of negative responses. After all of the “no, I’m wanted in six states” responses, here is what’s left.

that picture of the “fool the guesser” carnie is perfect.
i like that ski-lift looking thing they have going over the concession trailers. they didn’t have that last time i went to the ms state fair (er, 11 yrs ago).
hey, that “crazy mouse coaster photos” picture is damn fine, too. i like the composition of it.
about what time of day did you take these?
I think the ski lift thing has been there a long while, I’ll check with my father-in-law . . . he was talking about when they paved it the other day.
I took them between 11 and 12:30, wonderful clear skies.
Wanna buy one?
CARNIES!
Does the ski-lift work? It looks hella empty.
I like the young carnie with the shades. He’s the next generation of carnies, he’s a rockstar.
I never went to the Ms State fair. I’ve only been to the Fl state fair once (its in Tampa, so I have no recent excuse but Tampa is 5-6 hours from Tallahassee and 4-5 hours from Miami, Tampa’s cool and all but nothing in this state is close to anything else). I went to the Tx State fair once, the same year I went to the Texas-Oklahoma game (talk about a state where nothing is close to anything else).
I’m seriously bummed that you asked permission. I bet the carnies that said no are uber-sketchy looking. On the other hand, not having your camera broken is probably better.
The lift works, but I got there right as the fair opened, so many “rides” were empty.
Rockstar/Next Generation Carnie informed me that he works as a model in L.A. After seeing his teeth I concluded he was refering to Lower Alabama.
I like Satrship 2000. I bet that had more zing to it, oh, about 7 or 8 years ago.
i love the guesser. such a strange figbure in the fair to me. do they really develope an uncanny ability to guess? do they think they are a good guesser or just happy to fill the void of guesser in order to collect more money than the prizes are worth?
i like the flow of the picture the arch created from his face through the prizes on the right.
i hate the fair…at the same time it gives me a sense of discontentment with stationary life and makes me want to join the circus…to be a carnie…to be the one that everyone talks shit about but it doesn’t matter cause i’m gonna have a good time, get what i can out of your city, and be on to the next while you are still stuck with the myriad dramas you have collected in your sedimentary living style.
I’ve decided that the guessing folks are simply there to collect money. The prizes bought in bulk would amount to about 25¢ to 50¢ each and they charge $3.00 per guess. Even if they were the worst guesser of all time and gave everyone a prize, they would still more than cover the cost of the prizes. I imagine that for pure profit percetage it’s right up there with the human headed spider and the giant rat.
