b’ham

Jayrah and I went to my wonderful hometown this past weekend, in order to celebrate my little sisters nuptial vows. For several reasons I didn’t take any pictures of the celebration, but I did take a few portraits of my stepfather later that evening.

There were two photographers at the wedding reception (working together), both using older model cannon digital slrs (which I have no problem with). My employer provides my staff and me with mainly older model Fuji digital slrs, and I often find myself feeling some sort of camera inadequacy in comparison to parents at school events we photograph, since they all have Mark IIs or something just as expensive. A feeling that these guys may be equally familiar with . . .
I rarely think my equipment inspires this feeling in others though. The level of photography knowledge necessary for entry into the world of professional photography seems to be plummeting with the rise in technology, which makes it harder to take bad pictures. I regularly have supposedly professional photographers ask me what kind of equipment I use, and then not recognize the name of my camera brand. I think the blend of old and new in conjunction with the more substantial size makes my stuff a little hard to categorize just by looks . . . All of this is just to bitch about how little many who are paid for their supposedly professional services seem to know. A photographer brought her camera into my workplace because she was no longer able to mount her flash to her camera and she was shooting a wedding the following evening. She had the locking ring screwed all the way down, and it simply wouldn’t slide into the hot shoe mount. I’m a little snobby I know, but I don’t expect every professional photographer to understand esoteric stuff like reciprocity or lighting ratios . . . just how to work their camera in manual mode and I would be happy. If you can shoot decent photos in manual without ttl flash I’ll cut you some slack on not knowing how to set up a 3:1 lighting ratio with short lighting.

Oh man, guilty. I get paid for tking pictures all the time…and I have barely a clue what I am doing. I use what little I learned from hanging out with you guys and from back at the TV station, but seriously, I know I am not using my camera to its fullest potential for sheer lack of understanding it.

It’s one of those cannon digitals.

I don’t recall you advertising your professional photography services, but I know you understand lighting and composition better than many

Man, I hear that. I see 18 year olds running around with $800 digital SLR’s and I get seriously jealous. I get plain annoyed when they don’t even understand aperture settings. So, do I understand this to mean that you didn’t take pictures because there was a “professional” taking photos?

I’m kind of freaked out that your sister is married by the way.

I like the photo but, and maybe its my screen, it seems kind of dark.

There were several reasons I didn’t take photos, the least of which was the professional.

I agree on the darkness of the image. I adjusted the curves to use it as a test print for an epson 2200 on some watercolor paper, but I didn’t lighten it up before posting it, which I think I will do right now . . .

Comedy. I just checked back here on a different computer and saw that the image was much brighter and thought “ahh, it was just my monitor” only to find that you adjusted it.

Still freaked out that you sister is married though; I only seem to be able to imagine her at the age of, like, 12.
