They bring a colorful beauty, a man-made canopy, in a time when the park is gray and empty. And by calling them "gates" (as opposed to, um, flags, or whatever), there's an emphasis that you're traveling through something wonderful. As in, every step through the park should be cherished. Even though it might be a place of beauty and wonder at other times, this makes you go, I'm alive, I'm walking through this pretty place, and I should be happy. Oh, no, I completely disagree. I think my favorite are the tub gates. That is a fine, fine parody. And for the record i think the gates thing is weak.
