I’ve never been particlularly fond of this holiday.
There are 365 days in the year, what makes this one so special? The Roman calender sucks for this. At least the druidic calender makes some kind of sense, the solstice is a good reason for believing the the new year has begun. I don’t know much about other calenders. My point is that as a day, this is arbitrary. If you want to make a resolution about how to be a better person, why the hell are you waiting for this random ass day? Do it now!
You think I am kidding. I’m not. I’ve had too much to drink this evening to be polite. Be a better person now. Forget that I am telling you this at the beginning of the new year. You don’t need some holiday to justify a change to your life.
Having said that though I think, considering that most every other day is just as arbitrary, the switch from December to January is just as good a time to re-evaluate your life. My evaluation? I’m doing fine. There are some things I would like to do better and some things that I would like to not have done at all. I think there are, on average, more good than bad. I try to do what I think is right and to avoid doing what I think is wrong. And, when I can, I try to stop bad things from happening to others. I’m not sure what else we can honestly ask of others.
This is the year. The year you can make that change. The year you can make that difference. Its the year that things will get better. Its the year that things will get best. I have faith in you, you need only have faith in yourself and this is the year for that. I’m not sure that people ever really understand that what I like about ethics is what is says about what we can be, not what its says about what we shouldn’t be. I think everyone, even the lowest of us, if given the opportunity, can be the best of us. Give us that opportunity.
I’m tired.
Good to hear from you, Hud. Happy New Year.
I think one of the reasons that we use January 1st is because we reset everything else. Physically there is nothing significant to this day…its just another winter day, but pyschologically speaking it’s a heavyweight.
And humans need a disruption to notice things need a change. Its also good to have a regular point where you assess how things are with your life. Like people who change the batteries in the smoke detectors with daylight savings time…it’s a good visible reminder.
I only made a couple small resolutions this year. I usually don’t make any. My life is run pretty well, for the most part.
Hope you have a good year, man.
